In her latest blog post, our interior designer Marlene Card tells us why it’s important to choose an interior design that stands the test of time.
Modern classic is a timeless design style with clean lines, rich qualities, and ageless patterns and textures. When I walk into a space, I can usually tell when it was last decorated and this is what we don’t want.
Take a look at these dated interiors:
In the 1970s, we were introduced to shag carpet and lots of pattern. This kitchen is pretty close to being timeless, just by changing the colours.
Don’t get me wrong, I love it when old styles come back ‘in style’ but modern classic is always in style.
Let’s look at some modern classic designs:
The chairs used on the patio (right) are classic award-winning chairs called the Panton S by Verner Panton, designed in 1967. It’s timeless! The dining room chair is the Wishbone Chair and was designed in 1950 by Hans Wagner. It’s still reproduced today by the thousands!
My favourite chair is the Eames lounge chair and ottoman from 1956. These pieces live in museums like Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City and the Art Institute of Chicago, it has become one of the most significant furniture designs of the 20th century. It’s instantly recognizable and still fresh.
I’m fortunate enough to have an old Eames that I had recovered in white.
Here are some more modern classic looks from my own design collection:
I created a modern classic design that hopefully stands the test of time for this client given they only use the room once a year!
If you can guess the year I designed the room in the photo above, I will personally come to your home (in the GTA area) and give you a few pointers. Taking the first five guesses only!

1998 is my guess for the bedroom (I’m assuming that’s the ‘photo above’) – though I will point out that it’s easier to say “that is so [insert decade]” than “that is so [insert specific year]“.
