Back in August, we introduced  you to some of our Hearthstone by the Bay residents Gunnar Lindberg and Hank Muzerie. Today, we’d like you to meet Karen and Donald Lambie, who tell us what life is like for them at Hearthstone.

Residing in the Etobicoke area for some time, the Lambies knew that when selecting a retirement community location was a key factor. In 2011, after making the decision to downsize, they researched various retirement communities in the Etobicoke area and they came across Hearthstone by the Bay. They made the transition in September of 2011, and have never looked back since.

Hearthstone by the Bay appealed to Donald and Karen Lambie for a multitude of reasons. “We wanted the security of knowing that if our needs changed, we would not be separated or forced to move out of our home. We value homeownership rather than renting and liked the idea of buying into a care package and adding additional care components if and when we needed it”, says Karen.

The Lambies take comfort in knowing that at Hearthstone medical attention is on-site round-the-clock if and when they ever need it. For all their fitness and health needs, everything is available to the Lambies at their fingertips. “We never have to leave Hearthstone”, says Donald. There is a Recreational Coordinator that organizes on-site fitness activities and events and there is 24-hour assistance from staff and on-site maintenance professionals.

And Karen is still able to maintain her active lifestyle and independence and enjoys cooking in their full-size kitchen for visiting friends and family.

The Lambies also particularly enjoy the social aspect of Hearthstone by the Bay and they’ve formed some excellent friendships. “I have met a walking companion and shopping partner”, explains Karen, “and I regularly go to the daily coffee social hours.” Both Karen and Donald will also occasionally dine in Hearthstone’s private Lakeview dining room or opt to cook in their suite.

“I like to host visitors in our suite, go to Hearthstone’s movie nights and excursions with the men’s club”, says Donald. Both Donald and Karen take pleasure in going on Hearthstone’s shuttle excursions toStratford, Shaw festival and Niagara-on-the-lake to name a few.

Separately, Karen attends 45 minute group fitness classes on Mondays and Wednesdays, Nordic pole walking on Tuesdays and Aquafit on Fridays. Donald on the other hand, has 30 minute personal training sessions offered through Hearthstone on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

“If there’s one thing that we would tell other people who are considering moving into a retirement home, it would be to do their research and to come to Hearthstone for a trial stay before making a decision”, says Karen. “The residents are so happy and very friendly at Hearthstone.”
