In his first blog post for his monthly Construction Management 101 series, Davies Smith co-owner Graham Chalmers  discusses Davies Smith’s involvement in the construction of a high rise rental building at the Centre for Mental Health and Addiction (CAMH) .

A little known fact about Davies Smith Developments is that we not only build our own buildings, but we also provide construction management services for other companies too. One of our most recent projects is a 187 unit rental building on the original historic CAMH site on Queen Street West for a client named Verdiroc.

When Verdiroc approached us a few years ago and asked us to build the rental building at CAMH, we happily accepted. We only had two of our own projects at the time so this project fit in nicely with our schedule.

We were really thrilled about being a part of this project because Queen Street West is becoming a vibrant area for residents and visitors of all ages. The project is also unique and completely different from anything that we’ve ever done before and we jumped at the opportunity to be involved in something that will help remove the stigma of mental health.

With the CAMH project, we have continued to uphold the standard of high quality that all of our projects have. Some of the amenities that the rental building has include a multi-purpose room, a party room, a 2nd floor garden, and a lounge. The whole CAMH complex has a modern and open design and our rental building fits in quite well with the surrounding  area. In addition, the retail component is extensive and includes a Shoppers Drug Mart and a TD bank.

I’ve really enjoyed working with Verdiroc on this project and I’m also particularly pleased with the work that our team has done. We have a solid team of professionals here at DSD who are capable of managing and building any structure and they have done a great job of bringing the CAMH project to life.  Looking to the future, we wish to take on more unique and different projects so that we may utilize our construction management resources to the fullest.
