We love Halloween. We love October, we love pumpkin spice everything and we love getting the shivers from a really good Halloween movie. Don’t you?

With the help of some of our Twitter friends, we’ve compiled a list of must-watch movies leading up to the scariest night of the year.

Hocus Pocus

Hands down probably the best Halloween movie out there. It was a classic when some of us were children and it still remains a must-watch on our list. It’s a bit frightening but is also one of Sarah Jessica Parker’s best film performances to date.

The Cabin in the Woods

Almost forgot about this one because it’s borderline comedy but is still really scary. We don’t want to give anything away for those who haven’t seen it, but just know that the ending is the best part.

Poltergeist

They’re heeeeeere.” We love old horror movies and hope they never remake this 1980s classic. There were so many scary scenes in this movie but even more frightening, is the rumour that the set of the movie was cursed.

Child’s Play

Very few of us will ever be able to forget the serial-killing Good Guy doll Chucky. The newest instalment or rather reboot of the series Curse of Chucky is also pretty scary.  We guarantee that you won’t be sleeping with any stuffed animals or dolls for a long time after watching this movie.

Ernest Scared Stupid

After watching movies like Child’s Play and Poltergeist, you’re going to want something a little more funny and a lot less scary. Thankfully Ernest has you covered. It’s no Oscar winner but is  a 90s classic. We can’t imagine our Halloween without the lovable Ernest and the trolls.

Halloweentown

Okay. We know that this movie isn’t really scary but there’s something about it that makes it just so good. In this family favourite, 13 year old Marnie Cromwell finds out she’s a witch on Halloween (surprise, surprise) but the real fun starts when she follows her grandmother back to Halloweentown.

The Changeling

More supernatural than the other movies on this list, Changeling tells the tale of a man who is haunted by spirits in an old house after his wife and daughter are killed in an accident. It’s a plot that we’re all too familiar with, but still makes the list as it’s one of the first horror movies that we ever watched!

Scream

This 90’s slasher flick was the original inspiration for the Scary Movie comedy films that many of us all know and love. The characters in the film make it one of our Halloween must-watches: a weird cop, a young teenage girl, an ambitious reporter and a psychopathic killer in a ghostface mask … recipe for a great thriller!

Casper

We’re ending the list with two movies that aren’t at all scary but rather fit the theme of Halloween in other ways. Who doesn’t love Casper the friendliest ghost around? Even though Casper is a charming little ghost, it’s really his mischievous uncles Stretch, Fatso and Stinkie that keep us watching this gem year after year.

It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown

No explanation needed. You simply cannot have a special occasion without Charlie Brown and his clique of friends!
